FaithFaith is a major theme in Night because Eliezer dedicated his early life to religion. When he saw the cruelty of everything at the camps his faith was shattered and it never truly came back. I saw this as a major theme because it was such a huge part of who he was and then it wasn’t in his life at all. Many of the characters face the struggle to maintain faith in an evil world, and Eliezer was unable to.

Father-son relationshipsThe relation between Eliezer and his father was another huge theme because everyone else in the camps was fending for themselves, but they stuck together the entire time, which was a good and bad thing. When his dad was dying, eliezer gave him all of his food and his dad was becoming delusional. The guards beat his father and Eliezer realized he needed to let another part of his life go.

Loss of humanityOnce he’s put into a situation where his life is threatened, innocence is no longer real. Surviving became the main concern of Eliezer, and he was willing to do whatever it took to protect himself and his father. He wanted to hurt the people that he felt threatened by or people in higher power.
