Summary
Sometime in the 1700s, arctic explorer Robert Walton and his mighty fine crew sailed towards the North Pole in hopes of discovering something new and amazing. One day, the water froze around their ship, effectively trapping them and preventing them from making any progress on their journey. While stuck, the crew spots an inhumanly large figure ride across the ice on a dog sled. Hours later, the ice breaks and another dog sled driven by a smaller, average sized man appeared. The stranger is on the verge of death so Walton brought him on board and the crew quickly grew fond of this secretive yet warm man. The stranger finally opened up to Captain Walton and told him the story of his life leading up to that moment. It is revealed that the man is Victor Frankenstein, a scientist born in Geneva.
He was seventeen when he decided to go to college, but before he could depart, his mother caught Scarlett Fever from his adopted sister and betrothed Elizabeth and died. This left his family in a terrible state and furthered Victor's interest in life and death. After leaving his home to study science at the college in Ingolstadt, Victor became obsessed with the pursuit of life, and had decided to create it himself. He was driven practically insane by the goal of becoming the founder of a "new species" that would look to him as all powerful and spent two years gathering body parts to build his creation. With a strike of lighting the man was born. Frankenstein is horrified by the hideousness of the creature, so he retreats home and soon falls extremely ill. That night he had a dream of his lover turning into his mother's corpse and awoke to see the monster in his apartment, which terrified him and caused him to flea to an entirely new home. His childhood friend Henry comes from Geneva to take care of him, and Frankenstein regains his health after another eighteen months. The two had planned on returning to Geneva when Frankenstein was well again, but a letter from his father announcing the murder of his little brother William forced them to return immediately. A family friend named Justine was arrested and executed for the crime because she was found with William's locket. Frankenstein spotted his monster in Geneva and immediately knows that Justine was framed by the creature.
The monster approached Frankenstein in a field and told him what he had experienced during his time alive. He had been chased out of villages and beaten by travelers after trying to help. The monster came across a small hut attached to a house with a poor family inside. He spent one and a half years watching the family and learned about the love that he could have had. The poor family had once been a wealthy and upper class family in France, but the son had lost their fortune by helping a Turkish man and his daughter, whom he was in love with escape prison. The French government banished them and stripped them of their wealth. The Turkish woman appeared at the family's doorstep and they taught her the language, and the monster secretly learned along side her in the hut. He read a few books that he'd found outside and the letters left in Frankenstein's coat once he'd learned a bit. The father of the family was a blind man who Frankenstein reached out to when the rest of the family went out to town. He was kind to the monster but the family came back and forced him out when they saw his face. The son sold the house the next day and the creature never saw them again. He was so frustrated that he burnt down the house and then went to search for Frankenstein.
The monster then requested that Frankenstein build a bride just as ugly as the monster to make up for abandoning him and making him so unlovable. Frankenstein was disgusted and threatened the monster, but eventually agreed to building the woman. Frankenstein and Henry traveled to England and Scotland and Frankenstein began to build the body, but refused to, so the monster killed Henry and said that he would be back on Frankenstein's wedding night. Frankenstein was convicted for the murder and his teacher from college was brought in to see Frankenstein's reaction and determine his sanity. As soon as Frankenstein saw his special friend's lifeless body he fell back into a terrible illness. He spent two months in jail in this near death state, and was declared innocent in court due to circumstantial evidence or lack of evidence. He traveled back to Geneva with his father and receives a letter from his fiance accusing him of loving another, which he denies. Frankenstein and Elizabeth were wed and went to the family cottage where Frankenstein became paranoid about the monster's claim about his wedding night. He sat outside with his gun and prepared to kill it, but while he waited, the creature snuck into the cottage and killed his wife. Distraught, Frankenstein told his father, which shocked him to death. In desperation Frankenstein told the magistrate about his monster. The city declared him to be insane, and he vowed to spend the rest of his life searching for his creation.
The frame was then brought back to the ship in the arctic and Frankenstein was on the verge of death. He warned Walton of the dangers of wasting his life on the obsessive pursuit of knowledge and died shortly after. Walton and his crew collectively decided to turn back to England. When Walton returned to his room, the monster loomed over Frankenstein's dead body. He was melancholy at the sight of the corpse and promised to light himself on fire now that Frankenstein was dead.
